Samuel Jackson commonplace book of poetry and translations from German, 1831-1856.

This volume seems to be a commonplace book; it contains some translations from German poets (Schiller, Goethe, Stilling) as well as translations from or copies of poems by Biernatzki, Shoner, Klopstock, Lavater, Tersteegan, Menken, Mrs. Rowe, Barth, Eilers, Madame Schmitter, and Marianne Gleim. There are poems signed John Jackson, and several with titles like "Written in Joseph Oldham's album on his leaving home, 2nd October, 1836, Herne Hill, 1 October 1836," that seem to be original. Most of the poems reflect Biblical themes or comment on Biblical passages. A long section consists of verses composed for G.D. Krummacher's Christian's every-day book; this contains short sections dated from January 1 to December 30. There are occasional drawings, mostly pen and ink vignette, romantic landscapes, and a design after each poem. Entries are dated 1820-1840.
